Wet and cold

A strong cold front moved through North Texas on Wednesday bringing rain and thunderstorms. Additional rain is likely as a strong upper level weather system moves across the area tonight and Thursday. Some of the rain could be heavy.

Two to three inches of rain can be expected in the DFW area through early Friday morning. Flooding is a concern in the areas that receive the most rain.

Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday for areas east of Interstate 35E. An inch or two of rain will be possible for counties west of DFW.

Thursday will be much colder, but it will stay above freezing throughout the entire day. That means almost all of North Texas will see cold rain on Thursday. Areas to the west could see sleet or snow mixing with rain. Exactly how much is still uncertain, but travel could turn slick especially on bridges and overpasses.

All precipitation ends early Friday. New Year’s Day will be cold and breezy with temperatures only in the 40s. Warmer weather will gradually return next week.
