Nita Winona Vasquez, 33, faces a capital murder charge in the deaths of Miqueas Rangel, 34, and Roxanne Rodriguez, 27.

Officers were called about 3:40 a.m. Dec. 12 to the Super 8 in the 8900 block of East R.L. Thornton Freeway, where the shooting had been reported.

When they arrived, they found Rangel unresponsive in the grass, an affidavit says. A trail of blood led from him through a breezeway and to Rodriguez, who was lying in front of the door to one of the rooms. Both victims were pronounced dead at the motel.

A detective wrote in the affidavit that the hotel’s surveillance footage showed Rangel crawling through a breezeway, firing a gun and then taking cover behind a column.

The video then showed a man lean around the corner and fire several shots at Rangel, the affidavit says. Rangel stopped moving, and the man took his gun.

The gunman then was seen talking to Vasquez. The two eventually left in a black Cadillac that was driven by a third person after the man appeared to hide a gun in the sedan’s trunk, according to the affidavit.

Police said another armed man was seen in the surveillance footage, but it was unclear whether he was shooting at Rangel and the woman or trying to defend them.

Detectives said they were able to link the Cadillac’s license plate to Vasquez. A witness also said Vasquez called him to say she’d been involved in a shooting and needed money so she could leave town, the affidavit says.

Vasquez was booked into the Dallas County jail Dec. 17 and remains in custody, with bail set at $1 million. Her attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and that no additional arrests have been made.
