Counties southwest of metroplex swept by flood waters

Over the weekend, severe rainfall inundated roads, residences, and businesses across multiple counties, including Bosque, Erath, and Hamilton. According to Kirk Turner, Bosque County Emergency Management Coordinator, Clifton suffered the most significant impact.

As of Tuesday morning, road closures persisted while repair efforts continued, alongside damage assessments conducted by TXDOT and county authorities.

Tragically, one fatality was reported near Cranfills Gap. A couple sought refuge in their RV trailer due to its elevated position during the heavy rain. However, the man was swept away by the swiftly rising water after exiting the RV.

In Hamilton, about 45 minutes away, the aftermath of the downpour persisted, with mud causing inconvenience. The Circle T Arena, which hosted a barrel racing event over the weekend, had to cancel Sunday’s event due to the flooding.

During Saturday night’s rainfall, eight horses were sheltered in stables near Bear Creek, while five RVs were parked nearby. Kenneth Powell recounted how the situation escalated quickly, with water inundating the area.

Charlcie Horne, who was staying in one of the RVs, praised Powell’s quick thinking, which likely averted further disaster. Powell’s large RV acted as an anchor, preventing the water from rising further around Horne’s RV.

Despite Powell’s efforts, one RV was swept away, tragically resulting in the loss of two dogs belonging to a couple from Louisiana. Leighann Spence, who witnessed the incident, emphasized the danger posed not only by the rushing water but also by floating debris.

Those affected by the floods are now navigating insurance claims to repair their damaged RVs. Assessments of the overall damages in Hamilton County have yet to commence, according to the county’s Emergency Management.

Survivors of the incident expressed gratitude for their safety but acknowledged the need for precautions in the future. Plans for the rescheduled barrel race event and reflections on lessons learned underscore the community’s resilience in the face of natural disasters.
