Family of inmate who died in Tarrant County Jail takes aim at commissioners

During Tuesday’s commissioners court meeting, Janell Johnson, the elder sister of Anthony Johnson, who tragically passed away while in custody at the county jail, voiced her frustration: “So, Tarrant County, this is how you do things?” She, along with other family members, demanded transparency and accountability regarding Anthony’s death. They called for the release of video footage, a federal investigation, and systemic changes within the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s office, Anthony was involved in a confrontation with detention officers during a routine cell check for contraband. Pepper spray was used to subdue him, after which he became unresponsive during a medical examination and was pronounced dead at JPS Hospital. The absence of sheriff’s office representatives at the commissioners court meeting was attributed to their policy of refraining from commenting on ongoing investigations.

Commissioner Alisa Simmons raised questions about the jail’s response protocols for noncompliant inmates. The family revealed that Anthony had attempted to seek help at a mental health facility before his arrest but was turned away. Despite concerns about his mental health, he was arrested after allegedly brandishing a knife at a driver.

The family criticized the lack of communication from authorities and demanded answers regarding the circumstances leading to Anthony’s death. They called for a federal investigation and urged the commissioners to address deficiencies in the county’s mental health system.

Sheriff Bill Waybourn acknowledged the need for improved mental health resources following Anthony’s death but declined to comment on calls for a federal investigation. The Johnsons expressed their determination to seek justice through legal avenues and emphasized their commitment to effecting change, even through political means.

Neighbors and supporters echoed the family’s calls for accountability and systemic reform during public comments. The Johnsons emphasized their readiness to mobilize for change and pursue legal action with the assistance of attorney Darryl Washington.
