Dallas council to vote on sports deal day before new soccer team lays out details

Dallas is poised to welcome a new professional soccer team, pending a decision by the city council on Wednesday regarding the use of the 90,000-seat Cotton Bowl in Fair Park for sports events. The proposed team, part of the USL Super League, aims to kick off their season in the summer and will hold a “Brand Reveal Celebration” on Thursday at Klyde Warren Park to outline their plans. The event will feature remarks from Jim Neil, CEO of USL Super League Dallas, and Amanda Vandervort, President of USL Super League. While city officials haven’t confirmed the connection between the council’s decision and the team’s plans, more information is expected to emerge after the meeting.

Promotional materials, including slick videos showcasing Dallas’s skyline, have already generated buzz for the new women’s professional soccer team. The USL Super League emphasizes its commitment to fostering the future of women’s soccer, from youth to professional levels, and its ties to the global game.

According to city council documents, a nearly $600,000 two-year agreement is up for a vote on Wednesday, facilitating the team’s use of the Cotton Bowl for their games starting this summer. Longtime Dallas Mavericks radio broadcaster Chuck Cooperstein highlights the challenges and opportunities of using such a large venue for soccer, noting the importance of committed ownership for the team’s success. Despite potential drawbacks of playing in a stadium with excessive capacity, Cooperstein believes the current climate, buoyed by increased interest in women’s sports, particularly due to recent successes in the WNBA and women’s World Cup soccer, bodes well for the new team’s prospects.

Moreover, recent achievements in girls’ high school soccer championships in North Texas underscore the growing enthusiasm for women’s soccer. The timing aligns with ongoing renovations at the Cotton Bowl, enhancing its facilities and potentially attracting more events.
