Dallas man indicted after police say he killed friend while taking apart loaded gun

A 20-year-old Dallas man has been charged with manslaughter after police say he fatally shot a friend while drinking and disassembling a handgun at his far northeast Dallas apartment.

A Dallas County grand jury handed up the indictment of Brandon Eugene Lawellin last week in connection with the death of Colton Mach, 22.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Mach had gone to Lawellin’s apartment in the 9800 block of Pinyon Tree Road the evening of Oct. 14. The two were drinking, police said, and Lawellin was timing how fast he could take apart and reassemble his Glock.

While taking apart the pistol, Lawellin pulled the trigger, not realizing he’d left a loaded magazine in the gun, the affidavit says. The bullet struck Mach in the torso.

Police said that Lawellin called 911 to report the shooting and that he and a witness tried to give Mach first aid until Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived.

Mach was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Lawellin was booked into the Dallas County jail the day after the shooting and later released on $10,000 bond, court records show.
