Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price expected to announce she won’t seek another term

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, is expected to announce that she will not seek re-election during a Tuesday morning news conference, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported.

The announcement would mark the end of Price’s 10-year stint as mayor and will leave the 2021 Fort Worth race up for grabs with campaign filing just a week away.

Price, 71, served as the tax assessor in Tarrant County for a decade up until she ran a successful campaign and assumed office in 2011. She went on to serve five terms, with her fifth coming after defeating Deborah Peoples by 14 percentage points in 2019.

Price tested positive for the coronavirus in November, the same day Tarrant County reported over 2,100 cases, which was a county high at the time. Both Price and her husband, who also tested positive, have fully recovered.

A Fort Worth native, Price graduated from Arlington Heights High School before attending the University of Texas at Arlington.

The Star-Telegram reported that Peoples, the Tarrant County Democratic chair, has planned on another campaign but will make a final decision after meeting with her team. Fort Worth Magazine reported that Peoples posted “I’m running!” on her Facebook page Monday afternoon.

Lawyer Dee Kelly Jr. told Fort Worth Magazine, “She’s my friend, and I want to respect her timing on whatever announcement she chooses to make,” when asked if he planned to run.

Fort Worth City Council member Brian Byrd told the Star-Telegram that he will run if Price doesn’t seek re-election, while saying that she is the most qualified mayoral candidate.

Fellow City Council member Ann Zadeh also told the Star-Telegram that running for mayor “is an option I am seriously considering.”
