No other Texas city cracked the top 10.

WalletHub used 32 criteria to rank 182 cities across the nation, including at least two of the largest cities in each state, according to the study. The categories included job opportunities, employment growth, average monthly starting salary, unemployment, “under-employment,” industry variety, job security, job satisfaction, and others.

The only other Texas city to rank in the top 25 was Austin at 23rd. The other North Texas cities appearing on the list and their place were:

  • Grand Prairie at 69
  • Irving at 77
  • Garland at 88
  • Fort Worth at 100
  • Arlington at 104
  • Dallas at 112

Brownsville was ranked as one of the worst cities for jobs, coming in at 179 on the list. A list of all of the cities’ rankings is available here.

Unemployment was one of the most heavily-weighted categories in the formula for ranking cities.

Across the nation, the November unemployment rate was 6.7 percent. During the pandemic, the national unemployment rate was at one point as high as 14.7%.

In a Dec. 18 announcement, the Texas Workforce Commission reported that the state’s unemployment rate in November was 8.1%, up from 6.9% in October 2020.
