Dallas-Fort Worth expected to approach 70s then plunge to ‘the coldest air of the season’

North Texas is expected to get a brief taste of spring early this week before a powerful cold front sends temperatures plunging.

Weather will be mild for this time of the year on Sunday and Monday, then Dallas-Fort Worth is set for some serious cold, with lows expected to drop into the 20s for several days, KXAS-TV (NBC5) weather anchor Keisha Burns said.

“We are looking at the coldest air of the season,” Burns said. “In fact, we’ll stay relatively cold and below normal by February standards in the coming days.”

By the end of the week, highs will struggle to get out of the 30s across Dallas-Fort Worth, with lows in the 20s, according to NBC5.

Temperatures could be favorable for some snow or a wintry mix, but there’s still uncertainty in the forecast, National Weather Service meteorologist Patricia Sanchez said.

“The best decision for now is to not stray too much from the previous forecasts, but keep monitoring the trends over the next couple of days,” Sanchez said in a forecast update. “Nevertheless, if this cold air mass actually tracks south into our area, the main story will be the bitterly cold temps and wind chills expected by Friday and Saturday mornings.”

By the end of the week, wind chill values could drop into the teens or even single digits, Sanchez said.

North Texas won’t be the only place with below-normal temperatures this week. The cold air mass is expected to overtake much of the contiguous United States, according to the weather service.

The average high for the month of February in Dallas-Fort Worth is 60, with an average low of 39, the weather service said.

Dallas-Fort Worth records an average of 33 freezes during the winter, with the majority of those coming in January, according to the weather service. So far this year, the area has recorded a total of 12.

Here’s what KXAS-TV (NBC5) has in the forecast:

Sunday: 60/34

Monday: 68/45

Tuesday: 51/39

Wednesday: 40/35; 30% chance of rain

Thursday: 40/34; light rain or sleet possible
