Heavy snow coming

The temperature at DFW Airport actually rose to 33 degrees at 4 pm Saturday, breaking the streak of subfreezing temperatures at 94 hours. That was the 11th longest streak of subfreezing temperatures on record. And we are starting another one this evening. Temperatures likely won’t climb above freezing again until next Friday afternoon.

Conditions will begin to deteriorate overnight and into Sunday morning as light sleet and snow showers begin.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for much of North Texas until 6 pm on Monday. While the first sleet and snow showers will begin overnight, heavy snow is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue Sunday night. Four to six inches of snow is likely over a large area.

The snow will be powdery and driven by winds of 15 to 25 mph, limiting visibility. The good news is that since this snow will be so dry, it won’t accumulate as heavily on trees and power lines. But it will accumulate into drifts. The snow will end before sunrise Monday morning. Temperatures will fall into the single digits Monday morning and Tuesday morning, and wind chills will be well below zero.

The brutal cold will last all week with another chance of snow returning on Wednesday. Please avoid travel if possible. This weather is both dangerous and historic because of the length and intensity of the cold, not to mention the likelihood of accumulating snow. Take precautions for the bitterly cold weather, which will be capable of bursting pipes. Stay up to date on the latest forecast from the NBC 5 Weather Experts.
