Where is my $1,400 stimulus check? Here is how to find out

Millions of people have already received a third stimulus check, but many others are still waiting for it to arrive in their bank accounts or mail.

The Internal Revenue Service has a tool taxpayers can use to find the status of their stimulus payment — including if they use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

The tool is called Get My Payment, which people can use to check whether their payment is already on its way, when it should arrive, or whether there is some delay.

To use the tool, taxpayers must access this website and enter their data, including their Social Security Number or ITIN, date of birth, address and ZIP code.

For families with mixed immigration status that have some children who are U.S. citizens, parents who file returns with an ITIN will be able to get stimulus payments for which of their children are eligible.

Once you enter and submit your information, the system will display three possible answers:

  • Payment status: Meaning you are eligible and your payment has been processed, there is an available payment date and it will be sent via direct deposit or by mail. If sent by mail, it can be in the form of a paper check or debit card. It can also mean you are eligible, but your payment has not yet been processed and there’s still not a receipt date.
  • Payment status not available: If the system displays this message, it means your payment still hasn’t been processed or you’re not eligible. The IRS will continue sending financial impact payments during 2021, so it can take some time before you get your payment if you’re eligible.
  • We need more information: This means the IRS was unable to deliver your payment.s can occur when a check was sent to a previous address and it was returned, or the bank didn’t accept the deposit. In that case, you must update your information with the IRS.

The IRS has limited inquiries at the Get My Payment site to five times a day in order to avoid crashing the system.

After that number of inquiries, the system may deny you further access and ask you to return later. Your information will be blocked for 24 hours before you are allowed access again.
