Teen indicted in fatal shooting of Lancaster High senior, Wyoming football recruit Tony Evans Jr.

An 18-year-old Dallas man has been indicted on a murder charge in the April shooting death of Tony Evans Jr., a 17-year-old Lancaster High senior and University of Wyoming football recruit.

A Dallas County grand jury handed up the indictment of Keyshawn Evanta Harris on Wednesday, court records show.

Evans was fatally shot about 1:30 a.m. April 11 during a party at the Hawthorn Suites hotel in the 7900 block of Brookriver Drive. Another person was wounded.

Harris was arrested several days later.

Police have not released any additional information about the case, including what led to the shooting and how detectives identified Harris as a suspect.

Courtney Massingill, 18, told The Dallas Morning News that he had just parked at the Stemmons Corridor hotel when he heard shots and screaming. He called Evans, who didn’t answer his phone.

When someone told Massingill that Evans had been shot, he ran to the hotel and found his friend “in a puddle of blood.” He and other friends rushed Evans to the hospital, where they stayed until they learned of his death.

Evans, a wide receiver, had signed a letter of intent to play for Wyoming just weeks before his death.

His mother, Aretha Evans, said their family was “left broken-hearted” by the loss of the caring, upstanding teen.

“He encouraged those around him,” she said.

Wyoming football coach Craig Bohl was among the many athletes, coaches, politicians and community members who called for an end to gun violence in the wake of Evans’ slaying.

“Violent loss of life, that should not have happened,” he said. “Unfortunately it’s part of our society right now.”

Harris, who also faces a charge of aggravated assault, remained in custody Friday, with total bail of $1 million. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
