Saharan dust cloud brings haze, drops rain chance Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Here comes the dust. A plume of Saharan dust filling the Gulf of Mexico will move over Southeast Texas on Sunday. This will drop the rain chance to 20% or less and bring a slight hazy look to the sky.

Temperatures will start in the mid 70s and warm into the mid 90s.

Sunday evening we will watch a weak front approach our northern counties and bring potentially strong thunderstorms to communities north of Houston Sunday night.

How long with the Saharan dust cloud stick around, and should I be concerned about the air quality?
It appears the dust will stick around until Tuesday afternoon, and will add enough particulate matter to the atmosphere to push the air quality index into the “moderate” category. Most people won’t notice a difference, but if you are unusually sensitive to these clouds, your allergies could flare. Another Saharan dust cloud could reach us on Friday.

Does this mean we are done with rain?

Not entirely. The weak front stalling north of Houston will still be close enough to produce scattered downpours Monday. After Monday, rain chances will hold at 30% or less for the rest of the week, allowing high temperatures to warm into the lower and middle 90s every day.
