Driver of 18-wheeler dies after veering off roadway, hitting overpass embankment in Plano

The driver of an 18-wheeler died Thursday after the truck veered off the road and hit the embankment of an overpass in Plano, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Plano Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Peggy Harrell said emergency crews were alerted around 5:15 p.m. about the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Ohio Drive and the eastbound State Highway 121 service road.

The 18-wheeler, which had an attached trailer, had just gotten off Highway 121 at the Ohio exit when it veered off the road, drove through a small parking lot and into an embankment of the Ohio overpass, Harrell said.

“It’s a miracle that the truck did not hit any other vehicles when it left the road,” she said.

Harrell said the driver, who hasn’t been identified, was trapped inside the 18-wheeler for about 45 minutes. The truck’s cab was “almost completely crushed,” she said.

The driver was pronounced dead at a hospital, DPS said.

Sgt. Kyle Bradford, a DPS spokesman, said it wasn’t yet known what caused the truck to veer off the road. The crash remains under investigation.
