Richardson ISD students among winners in DART ‘everyday heroes’ art contest

Two Richardson ISD students were among the winners in the 2021 Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) annual student art contest.

Katherine Ramirez Sosa an eighth-grader at Richardson West Junior High School was chosen honorable mention in the sixth- to eighth-grade category. Kelly Araujo a senior at Richardson High School, was selected honorable mention in the 9th- through 12th-grade category.

Their art was chosen from a total of 688 entries in the contest.

During the contest, students were asked to create their interpretation of the theme “Everyday Heroes Ride DART,” in honor of those who have kept things moving while working on the front lines during the pandemic. That includes DART workers, healthcare professionals, police and fire crews, teachers, delivery drivers, and supermarket and restaurant employees.

Students interpreted the theme by creating images with various tools, including crayons, paint, markers, colored pencils and/or digital art.

The artwork is on display at Love Field Airport through Aug. 31 and is also featured on DART’s website.

In addition, the student work will be displayed at DART rail stations, on buses and inside trains, and the Dallas Museum of Art.

A list of all area winners and their artwork is available online.
