Mayor Eric Johnson and partners offer COVID-19 vaccines at Fair Park in South Dallas

Walk-up and drive-through vaccinations will be available for students who are 12 and older and their families at Fair Park in South Dallas on Friday during the Mayor’s Back to School Fair.

The fair, an annual event to give students and their families school supplies, will have a drive-through portion from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and walk-up vaccines will be available from 4 to 6 p.m.

Cases and deaths are once again on the rise due to the delta variant, which is more contagious and may cause more severe illness. Health experts are urging residents to get vaccinated, as that will reduce transmission and help prevent the virus from mutating into other strains.

“I am incredibly grateful for our latest partnership with the state as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement. “The highly contagious delta variant is spreading rapidly, and vaccines remain the single best tool we have in our fight against this deadly virus.”

Vaccinators with the Texas Military Department and Wal-Mart will have a couple hundred doses on hand but will be able to access more if necessary to vaccinate everyone who wants a shot, according to a city spokesman. If people have already received their first dose, they can present their vaccination card to receive a second one.

The vaccines will be provided in Lot 16 for the drive-through portion and in Exposition Plaza, near the Fair Park Dart Station, for the walk-up.

Registration for the back to school event closed after 10,000 families signed up to receive a pack. To qualify for free school supplies, students were required to live in the city of Dallas or attend a Dallas ISD school.
