Dallas County reports 1,350 new coronavirus cases, six deaths as surge continues

Dallas County reported 1,350 new coronavirus cases and six COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday.

The continued backward slide in the fight against COVID-19 prompted Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins on Wednesday to issue a new mandate that masks be worn in Dallas County schools and businesses.

“We are in a war against COVID and, sadly, COVID once again has the upper hand,” Jenkins said in a tweet Wednesday.

Of the new cases, 631 were confirmed and 719 were probable. Several hundred of the new probable cases were the result of reporting backlogs, county officials said.

The numbers bring the county’s overall case total to 328,289, including 281,121 confirmed and 47,168 probable. The death toll is 4,238.

According to the state, 1,399,722 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 1,162,994 — 53.3% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Texas

The state reported 17,898 more cases on Wednesday, including 14,214 confirmed cases and 3,684 probable cases.

The state also reported 112 COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, raising its toll to 52,667.

The state’s case total is now, 3,263,196 including 2,759,310 confirmed and 503,886 probable.

There were a total of 10,463 hospitalizations in the state as of Tuesday, the latest day for which data was available. That includes 2,503 in North Texas.

According to the state, 15,438,598 people in Texas have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 12,929,953 — 53.7% of the state’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 846 new cases and six deaths Wednesday.

The county has now reported 281,991 total cases, including 235,096 confirmed and 46,895 probable. The death toll is 3,689.

The county reported that 879 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 997,229 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 859,685 people — 50% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Collin County

The state added 427 new cases and no deaths to Collin County’s totals Wednesday.

Of the new cases, 378 were confirmed and 49 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s case total to 100,538, including 82,091 confirmed and 18,447 probable. The death toll is 870.

The county reported that 318 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 628,978 people in Collin County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 547,442 — 63.27% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Denton County

Denton County reported 530 new cases and one death Wednesday.

The numbers bring the county’s case total to 82,631. The death toll is 634.

The death was of a woman in her 70s who lived in unincorporated southeast Denton County, the county reported.

The county reported that 150 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 492,014 people in Denton County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 435,693 — 58.07% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Other counties

The Texas Department of State Health Services has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

The latest numbers are:

  • Rockwall County: 13,268 cases (10,401 confirmed and 2,687 probable), 160 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 17,923 cases (14,673 confirmed and 3,250 probable), 276 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 24,684 cases (20,040 confirmed and 4,644 probable), 329 deaths.
  • Johnson County: 21,495 cases (18,090 confirmed and 3,405 probable), 393 deaths.
