80-year-old Kaufman County woman faces murder charge in her daughter’s fatal shooting

An 80-year-old Kaufman County woman has been arrested on a murder charge after the fatal shooting of her daughter.

Sheriff’s deputies were called about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday to a home in the 12000 block of FM1836, in an unincorporated area about 9 miles southeast of Kaufman, where they found 52-year-old Connie Helms dead. She had been shot in the shoulder, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported.

Helms’ mother, 80-year-old Margaret Ann Johnston, was booked into the Kaufman County jail Wednesday morning on one count of murder. Her bail was set at $1 million, and it was unclear whether she had an attorney.

Johnston owns the home deputies were called to, according to property records.

Authorities are still investigating and have not released additional information about the case.
