Scattered storms return Thursday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Wednesday morning’s storms dropped a solid inch of rain across most of Southeast Texas, zapping energy and moisture out of the atmosphere. The atmosphere will recharge and that will lead to a return of scattered downpours for Thursday.

With the air still rain-cooled, patchy fog is likely to develop Thursday morning, especially northeast of Houston. Lows will dip into the lower 70s. Morning sunshine will quickly warm temperatures into the mid 80s by the afternoon, and that’s when scattered downpours will develop. Any storm could drop a quick inch of rain and produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

Since these storms will be driven by the warmth of the day, everything should dissipate by sunset making for a dry Thursday evening.

When will the next weather system impact us?
While there could be some scattered downpours Thursday, the next weather system will impact us more on Friday and Saturday. Rain chances are down to 40% on Thursday but at 60% for Friday and Saturday when more organized lines of storms could roll through.

How much more rain could we get this week?
An additional 1-2″ of rain will be fairly common, but there could be some neighborhoods that pick up over 4″ by the end of Sunday.

What is the outlook for the weekend?
Rain is possible both days this weekend, but Saturday brings a higher chance of rain (60%) than Sunday (40%). Temperatures both days will stay in a similar range, warming from the low 70s in the morning and peaking in the mid 80s during the afternoon. A front moving in late Sunday will put an end to the rain chances for several days.

Okay, you mentioned a front. How cool will it get?
This front is more of a “dry” front, dropping the humidity more than anything. You’ll notice cooler temperatures in the 60s around sunrise and lower humidity in the afternoon sunshine. You may get to enjoy this dry air for all of next work week.

Is there anything of concern in the tropics?
At this time, no. Tropical Storm Victor has formed near Africa, and Sam is still a major hurricane. Both storms are expected to stay out in the Atlantic and far away from the Gulf. You can get a full overview of the tropics on our tropical update page.
