Total lunar eclipse tonight

DFW Airport reached a high of 97 Sunday afternoon, breaking the old record for the date, and a full 14 degrees above normal. The first two weeks of May have been the second hottest ever for DFW, trailing only the drought year of 1955. Unfortunately, this early summer heat that we’ve been experiencing looks to get even more intense. Record highs will be well within reach much of the upcoming week.

Be sure to take those heat precautions this next week. It may be a good idea to scale back some outdoor activities so as not to overexert yourself in the heat. Be sure to stay hydrated too. Also, keep your pets cool and watered.

A very weak cold front will drift into North Texas overnight. It will likely trigger thunderstorms, but primarily to the northeast of Dallas. But temperatures won’t drop more than a couple of degrees on Monday. Then it is back to record heat for the rest of the work week.

Let’s hope the sky remains cloud-free for most of North Texas, so there will be a chance to view the spectacle of a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse begins at 9:28 pm this evening. But you really want to watch between 10:29 and 11:54 pm, when totality will occur. Unfortunately storm clouds in northeast Texas will make it difficult to see there.

There’s a slight glimmer of hope for thunderstorms to bring some more substantial heat relief next weekend. Any rainfall will be much appreciated. And temperatures will fall back closer to normal for this time of year.
