In domestic disturbance, Frisco officers talk armed hostage taker out of family home

Frisco police arrested an armed man early Thursday morning after a hostage-taking in a family home.

After negotiating for nearly an hour with the hostage-taker, who was identified as Lawrence Porath, police took him into custody without incident.

At 3:39 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 3400-block of Continental Drive on a family disturbance call.

According to police, the caller inside the house said that Porath, 45, had entered the home and was armed with a handgun.

After learning that Porath was threatening “to kill the residents and was actively assaulting one of them,” officers entered the home and were met by gunfire.

Officers in the home talked with the suspect while officers outside removed children from an upstairs room near Porath using a ladder from the Frisco Fire Department, according to a Frisco Police Department news release.

The Frisco Police Department SWAT team and crisis negotiators were deployed to the scene, and after about an hour of speaking with them, Porath released the hostage.

Porath left the house and was taken into custody without incident soon after. Frisco EMS transported the hostage to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Porath was transported to the Frisco Detention Facility, where he faces three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, two counts of aggravated assault deadly weapon, three counts of violation of protective order, one count of repeated violation of protective order and one count of aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon.

Porath’s total bond was set at $1,950,000, according to police.
