Man arrested after fatal shooting at southeast Oak Cliff DART station

A 35-year-old man was arrested after police say he fatally shot a man at a DART station in southeast Oak Cliff earlier this year.

Eric Devone Warren faces a murder charge in the slaying of 30-year-old Richard Hines. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

About 10 p.m. April 4, DART officers responded to the Ledbetter Station in the 2000 block of East Ledbetter Drive, near South Lancaster Road, and found Hines bleeding from his head, mouth and eyes, police wrote in an arrest-warrant affidavit.

Surveillance footage from the station showed a man walk past Hines and look down at him as he passed. As the train pulled into the station, Warren shot Hines several times, the affidavit says.

The footage showed tattoos the man had on his face, neck and hands and that he had “rat tails” in his hair, the affidavit says.

Detectives were able to identify the man in the footage as Warren using facial-recognition software and social-media accounts, police wrote in the affidavit.

When police executed a search warrant on his messaging app, they found messages he sent saying he planned to leave Dallas the afternoon of May 5, according to the affidavit. One message read, “They ain’t gone connect the dots anyway, if so I be gone by then.”

Detectives interviewed Warren’s mother, who said she saw her son on the news and referenced a police news release that included a photo of Warren, police said.

Warren had an active warrant for a parole violation at the time of the shooting, police wrote in the affidavit. Court records show he had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault in 2013.

Warren has remained in the Dallas County jail since his arrest July 26, with bail set at $500,000.
