D-FW coaches, former UNT players remember youth football coach Mike Hickmon

Mike Hickmon’s impact on football went far beyond his playing career.

Those close to him, including Seagoville head football coach Stephen Jackson Jr., said his influence on the game only increased after he finished playing at UNT in the early 2000s.

Hickmon, 43, was shot and killed Saturday after an argument at the Dragons’ game in Lancaster, according to police and medical officials.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office confirmed he died at the hospital Saturday evening, and city of Lancaster spokesman Scott Finley identified Yaqub Salik Talib, brother of former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib, as the suspected shooter. Talib turned himself in to the Dallas County Jail on Monday, Finley said.

A cause of death has not been determined, according to the examiner’s office.

“He was one of the better youth coaches in the state of Texas by far,” Jackson said. “So many of these youth coaches are just coaching to say they coach, but they don’t have extensive knowledge of the game. Mike actually does.”

Jackson and Hickmon’s UNT teammates said family and football were most important to him. He combined those two passions by coaching his nine-year-old son, Mike Hickmon II, on the DEA Dragons youth football team.
