Here’s where you can get free food, holiday meals this season

The holidays can be expensive, and spending extra on the festivities may not be feasible for families struggling to make ends meet — especially because of rising food costs.

Sky-high inflation across Dallas-Fort Worth and lingering supply-chain issues from the pandemic are driving up the cost of food this year. One recent study found that the cost of a basket of holiday dinner staples such as turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce and egg nog has risen by 16%.

To help those in need, numerous North Texas churches and charities come together around major holidays to distribute food to families in need. Here are some organizations hosting food assistance programs and handing out hot meals this holiday:

Highland Oaks Church of Christ, 10805 Walnut Hill Lane in Dallas, is hosting a free Christmas brunch at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Interested families should RSVP online.
