From a synagogue standoff to Dallas hospital slayings, these crimes defined 2022

From the first month of 2022, North Texas experienced high-profile crime that gained international attention.

And it didn’t end there.

A gunman held four people hostage at a synagogue in Colleyville. Two mass shootings in Dallas prompted a citywide crackdown on event promoters. A man on parole was accused of slaying two medical workers, which stirred questions about safety at hospitals and the effectiveness of ankle monitors.

Dallas ended the year with fewer violent crimes than in 2021, but for much of 2022, the city’s murder rate trended up. Scores of other incidents gripped the larger region and, sometimes, the nation or world.

Here are 10 of the highest-profile crimes in 2022, along with updates about where they stand now.

Colleyville synagogue standoff

A gunman entered Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville one Saturday in mid-January and took four people hostage, leading to an 11-hour standoff that left people throughout the world holding their breaths.

Nearly 200 law enforcement officials responded to the synagogue Jan. 15 and tried to negotiate with Malik Faisal Akram, a British national who demanded the release of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani woman serving an 86-year sentence for shooting at two U.S. military officers during an interrogation.

Akram released one hostage during the standoff. Hours later, Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker said, he threw a chair at Akram, and he and the two other hostages bolted for an exit, then sprinted to safety. FBI agents entered the synagogue and fatally shot Akram.

Authorities called the standoff an act of terrorism. The man who sold the gun to Akram was later sentenced to nearly eight years in federal prison on a gun charge.

About a month after the standoff, Cytron-Walker moved to North Carolina and is now the rabbi at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem. He remains vocal about safety concerns at synagogues and rising rates of antisemitism, and has testified before the U.S. Congress about the issue.
