Man fatally shot by officers in Watauga after standoff, police say

A man was fatally shot by law enforcement in Watauga, north of Fort Worth, after an hours-long standoff that began early Friday, police said.

Watauga officers and other law enforcement responded about 3:30 a.m. to the 7700 block of Virgie Court, near Starnes and Whitley roads, for a reported suicidal person, Watauga police said.

Officers began speaking with the man, who discharged a weapon several times inside his house during the negotiations, police said.

After several hours, the man walked out the front door with a gun and raised it toward officers, police said. The officers feared “imminent bodily injury or death,” police said, and two officers opened fire.

The man was struck and officers immediately rendered aid, police said. He died at a hospital.

Police did not identify the man or say how long the incident lasted. They did not identify the officers who fired their weapons.

No officers were injured, police said.

Watauga police said the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
