Former Dallas ISD superintendent could be ‘chosen’ to lead Houston ISD, Houston mayor says

The mayor of Houston on Saturday shared a social media post suggesting a former Dallas ISD superintendent could be “chosen” to lead Houston ISD.

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath in March announced a takeover of Houston ISD — Texas’ largest school district. Houston ISD tried to challenge the move legally, but the Texas Supreme Court in January sided with the Texas Education Agency’s takeover.

In his Saturday tweet, Turner described the process for choosing the new superintendent “totally flawed,” and pushed Morath to either confirm or deny whether Miles will lead Houston ISD.

Morath attempted to remove HISD board members in 2019 following years of poor academic performances at a high school and alleged failings and misconduct of trustees at the time.

“One person in Austin is deciding who will be the Superintendent and Managers,” Turner tweeted.

Miles resigned as Dallas ISD’s superintendent in 2015 after failed contract negotiations. Under his three-year tenure, the district expanded specialized schools and prekindergarten programs, increased funding for struggling campuses and changed the way the district conducted teacher and principal evaluations.

While some supported the former military man and his work to reform education, Miles ran into multiple issues at the district, including clashes with trustees and district policy violations.
