Doctor shot at Cedar Hill clinic was leading people to safety, affidavit says

The man accused of shooting a doctor in a Cedar Hill medical facility Tuesday attacked his ex-girlfriend the night before he showed up to her workplace with a gun, police say.

Bryan McGee, 34, of Glenn Heights faces charges of aggravated assault and attempted capital murder of a peace officer, according to police. He was shot by police Tuesday and remained in critical condition Wednesday. It was not clear whether he had an attorney.

Officers responded to calls of an “active shooter” about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at Methodist Family Health Center in the 900 block of East Belt Line Road. According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, a caller told dispatchers a man had shot a doctor in the leg inside the clinic.

Police said in the affidavit the gunshot victim, a 62-year-old doctor, told investigators he was at his workstation when another employee told him there was a man with a gun in the lobby. The doctor went to the lobby and saw the man carrying a “long gun.”

“The victim stated he knew this was an emergency at that time,” police wrote in the affidavit.

The doctor closed the door and began escorting other employees and patients out of the building through other exits. He was near his workstation, the affidavit says, when he heard someone saying something about “shooting people.”

Believing the gunman was approaching, the doctor began running towards an employee exit when he heard a gunshot and felt pain in his lower back. The doctor told police the gunshot did not knock him down, so he continued to run outside.

Some employees ran to the back of the building and locked themselves in a closet where they heard “several shots being fired,” according to an affidavit.

Officers arriving at the clinic saw a man — later identified as McGee — driving off in a black four-door Chrysler. He struck a police vehicle as he drove through the parking lot, according to the affidavit.

Police pursued McGee until he crashed into a vehicle in the 700 block of East Belt Line Road.

Police said McGee shot at police, and five officers returned fire. The department released body- and dash-camera footage Wednesday of the shooting.

Investigators said they found a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, a pistol and ammunition inside the vehicle McGee crashed.

Investigators believe Tuesday’s shooting was related to a breakup between McGee and his ex-girlfriend.

According to an affidavit, the ex told detectives McGee threatened to kill her Monday night, choked her, threw her employee badge at her and pointed a gun at her. The woman told investigators McGee said “if he could not have her no one could,” the affidavit says.

That night, the woman moved to her mother’s home, where she later found her vehicle damaged with a bullet placed underneath her tire.

According to police, McGee went to the clinic about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, then called his ex-girlfriend several times before showing up again with a gun.

Methodist Health System said in a statement the physician who was shot has been released from the hospital.
