Suspect told police he shot his brother, dad during argument in Oak Cliff, affidavit says

An argument Monday in west Oak Cliff escalated into a man fatally shooting his brother and wounding his father, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

Juan Martinez, 21, was arrested at the location of the shooting and faces one charge each of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He remained in custody Wednesday, jail records show. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Officers responded about 1:10 a.m. to a shooting call in the 1300 block of Hartsdale Drive near the intersection of West Colorado Boulevard.

Police said they found two gunshot victims — the suspect’s brother and father — whom they transported to the hospital.

The brother, 25-year-old Louis Martinez, died while the 48-year-old father was treated for gunshot wounds in his arm and shoulder area, according to police.

Before the shooting, the suspect, victims and two witnesses were involved in a “family disturbance” when the suspect slammed his fist through a glass-topped table and grabbed a shotgun out of his closet before leaving the house, the affidavit says.

Two witnesses followed Juan Martinez out of the house and a short time later his brother, father and another witness also came outside causing the argument to continue. Police said his brother was also armed.

Witnesses told officers that they heard several shots but did not say who fired them.

The affidavit says Juan Martinez told officers, “I shot them.”

He was taken into custody at the scene.

The affidavit did not elaborate on what the argument was about. The investigation is ongoing.
