Multiple cold fronts to ‘maintain’ chilly conditions in North Texas through New Year’s

A series of fronts expected to move through North Texas this week could lead to cold weather conditions in the region for the remainder of the week and into the new year, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The “main front” moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth area over Christmas Eve weekend, bringing showers to many parts of North Texas, said Matt Bishop, a National Weather Service meteorologist. The region also saw near to below freezing temperatures Christmas evening into early Tuesday.

While temperatures in North Texas rose slightly throughout Tuesday afternoon, with NWS Fort Worth website showing highs in the mid to upper 50s, a cold front is expected to arrive overnight into Wednesday, Bishop said. The front will lead to more breezy conditions in the region compared with earlier this week.

“The winds will be a little higher tonight, but the temperatures won’t be quite as low,” Bishop said.

As the cold front moves through the region, lows expected in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are in the low to mid-30s range, Bishop said. With wind chill, however, temperatures could feel like the upper 20s in some parts of North Texas.

“The wind will increase to 10-15 mph first thing in the morning, but it really won’t be gusty until we get to noon time [Wednesday,]” Bishop said. “But the temperature will climb once the sun comes up.”

A “reinforcing” cold front is also possible “either Thursday night or Friday,” Bishop said. Additionally, a third front could arrive on New Year’s Eve. No precipitation is expected this week, Bishop said.

“All that does is maintain the cold air that’s in place,” he said.
