Pregnant woman killed, 3 hospitalized in Dallas crash involving off-duty officer

An off-duty Dallas police officer was involved in a crash early Saturday that killed a pregnant woman and hospitalized three people, including a baby, authorities said.

Dallas County sheriff’s deputies responded to the collision about 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 30 near South Second Avenue, the office said in a news release. When deputies arrived, they found a stalled Chevy Malibu in the center lane.

The sheriff’s office said an off-duty police officer in a Jeep Wrangler struck the Chevy. All occupants in the Chevy were taken to a local hospital, though the sheriff’s office did not say how many were in the vehicle.

A pregnant woman was pronounced dead after arriving to the hospital, according to the release. Her identity was not released. The sheriff’s office said her baby survived but is in critical condition.

Two others in the Chevy Malibu are also in critical condition. The officer, who was not identified, received a medical evaluation and was released from the hospital, the release said.

The crash led authorities to shut down most eastbound lanes of the interstate in the area. According to the sheriff’s office, the roadway opened a little before 6 a.m.

No additional information was immediately available including what led up to the crash. The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation.
