A storm system reintroduces the possibility of rain to North Texas on Friday night

A storm system originating from the West Coast will bring increased rain chances to the area. This weather phenomenon is characteristic of a typical El Niño event, which involves the abnormal warming of surface waters in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

During El Niño in the winter months, the subtropical branch of the jet stream strengthens across the southern United States, resulting in higher chances of wet weather from Southern California to Florida. Conversely, the polar jet stream tends to recede into Canada, leading to fewer and weaker polar intrusions and favoring relatively mild and dry winter conditions across the northern U.S. and southern Canada.

What to Expect:
This storm system will impact North Texas from Friday evening into Saturday, bringing showers and thunderstorms. Some storms may be strong, capable of producing hail. Rainfall amounts will vary across North Texas, ranging from half an inch to over an inch, with localized totals exceeding 2 inches possible in eastern North Texas. Exercise extreme caution in flood-prone areas.

What to Do:
Stay weather aware before, during, and after significant weather events. The NBC 5 Weather Experts will provide updates on the latest information regarding this storm system.
