A Dallas resident passed away two days after sustaining gunshot wounds following a minor collision

The investigation into a shooting following a collision near downtown Dallas has transitioned into a homicide inquiry.

According to Dallas Police, authorities were summoned to a hospital around 4 a.m. on Saturday where they were informed that 23-year-old Elian Murrugarra had sustained gunshot wounds.

Murrugarra was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash on southbound Interstate 35E near Woodall Rodgers. Following the collision, as the driver was maneuvering to pull over, an unidentified individual discharged a firearm into the vehicle, striking Murrugarra.

Police reported that Murrugarra was transported to the hospital in critical condition. However, on Monday, authorities confirmed his passing due to the injuries sustained, prompting the case to be reassigned to the homicide unit.

Dallas Police did not specify whether the gunshot originated from the vehicle that Murrugarra’s vehicle collided with or from another vehicle. No suspect has been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Individuals with information regarding this homicide are urged to reach out to Detective Phillip Wheeler at 214-671-3686 or via email at phillip.wheeler@dallaspolice.gov.
