Neighbors in Hood County are expressing health concerns due to noise pollution emanating from a Bitcoin farm in the area

Residents in Hood County are facing persistent noise issues stemming from a nearby Bitcoin mining operation, causing discomfort and health concerns among neighbors.

Cheryl Shadden, who resides across the street from the facility outside of Granbury, described the noise as akin to constant jet engines taking off, disrupting daily life for the past two years.

The source of the noise is attributed to a Bitcoin mining plant operated by Marathon Digital Holdings, where exhaust fans used to cool the computers emit loud sounds resembling jet engines, causing headaches, hearing loss, vertigo, and other health issues among residents.

Despite numerous noise complaints filed with Hood County authorities, little action has been taken beyond issuing noise complaint tickets for noise levels exceeding 85 decibels.

Nanette Samuelson, Hood County Commissioner for Precinct 2, acknowledged the influx of noise reports but explained that current regulations limit the county’s ability to address the issue effectively.

Jackie Sawicky, founder of the Texas Coalition Against Cryptomining, highlighted the need for legislative changes to target noise pollution specifically from cryptocurrency mining operations.

In response to inquiries, Marathon Digital Holdings expressed a commitment to addressing the concerns raised by residents. The company plans to invest $650 million in Hood County over the next five years, creating job opportunities and contributing to local tax revenues. They have initiated a sound study and are working closely with residents and officials to find solutions to mitigate the noise impacts.

Residents expressed hope that the company’s efforts would lead to tangible improvements, as the noise continues to disrupt their daily lives, affecting sleep and overall well-being.

Samuelson announced plans to include a discussion on the Bitcoin noise matter during the upcoming Hood County Commissioners Court meeting on Feb. 13.
