Authorities are actively seeking the individual responsible for fatally shooting a 16-year-old in Denton

Authorities are currently searching for the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in Denton.

Ely Mendez, a student at Denton High School, was remembered fondly by his brother, Jharrison Mendez, as having a compassionate heart despite not always being the sweetest.

Their last encounter was on Saturday, a day that Jharrison could not have predicted would be their final interaction.

According to Jharrison, Ely initially planned to spend time with a girl and then meet up with friends. However, the night ended tragically.

Denton police responded to a call reporting an unconscious person at 11:37 PM near Denia Park. The caller informed authorities of an unresponsive driver with a bullet hole in the vehicle’s window. Despite being transported to a hospital, Ely was later pronounced dead.

Ely, just 16 years old, was known for his musical talent, particularly in playing the piano. He also participated in football at Denton High School and aspired to become a lawyer.

Seeking closure and justice, the family and community mourn Ely’s loss and hope for answers regarding the circumstances of his death.

Denton High School Principal Joel Hayes conveyed his condolences to parents in a letter, informing them of Ely’s unexpected passing and offering support to his family during this challenging time.

As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made. Individuals with information regarding the shooting are urged to contact Detective Hunter Gay or Denton County Crime Stoppers to provide tips anonymously.
