City’s tourism bureau celebrates contributions of Black Houstonians

In celebration of Black History Month, Houston First, the city’s tourism bureau, has introduced Houston Signature Experiences to honor the enduring contributions of Black Houstonians throughout the year. This initiative integrates five significant aspects of Black heritage from the past, present, and future, offering both locals and visitors an enriching exploration.

The journey begins at the historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in downtown Houston, erected in 1875 and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as Houston’s inaugural Black Baptist congregation.

Additionally, the Heritage Society presents guided tours of three historical homes, showcasing narratives from plantation life to emancipation. For culinary enthusiasts, there’s an opportunity to indulge in Southern delicacies and soulful tales, delving into the essence of Southern culture through delectable desserts.

For those craving traditional soul food, “This Is It Soul Food” offers a tantalizing array of menu items while imparting the restaurant’s rich history and culinary legacy.

To cap off the experience, visitors can explore Pur Noire, Houston’s premier Black-owned winery, where they can savor selections curated from California vineyards and discover unique pairing choices.

Participants have the option to select individual experiences or combine them for a comprehensive immersion into Black heritage. The aim is to spotlight lesser-known landmarks and provide immersive encounters, positioning Houston as a prominent destination for Black history alongside other renowned cities.
