‘Significant number’ of sexual assault cases suspended due to HPD staffing, Chief Finner says

In Houston, Texas, the Neighborhood Safety Tracker reported 1,771 sexual assaults in the past 12 months, indicating a 3.8% increase compared to the average over the last four years.

However, what remains unclear is the number of cases solved, prompting Houston Police Chief Troy Finner to address a concerning issue on Friday night.

According to Finner, a recent internal review revealed that a significant number of adult sexual assault cases were suspended or delayed due to a “lack of personnel.”

In response, Finner expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “Regardless of staffing challenges, this should have never happened and will not continue.” He emphasized the importance of treating all victims and their families with utmost care and respect.

To rectify the situation, Finner announced that a team of investigators has been assigned to review cases labeled as “Suspended – Lack of Personnel.” Additionally, he has permanently assigned extra investigators to the Special Victims Division, the department responsible for handling such cases.

Despite attempts by Eyewitness News to seek clarification and context from the Houston Police Department, details remained limited. The duration of time that the chief was aware of the backlog cases also remains uncertain.

Finner intends to provide further details and address the issue extensively during a news conference scheduled for the following week.
