Lakewood Church shooting: Concerns rise as services resume amid pending release of body cam footage

Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas (KTRK) is set to resume its services on Sunday, following a disturbing incident last week where a woman opened fire inside the building during the afternoon service.

The woman, identified as Genesse Moreno, 36, was fatally shot by off-duty law enforcement personnel who were present at the church at the time. Her 7-year-old son was also wounded, while another man was injured but survived the ordeal.

The church spokesperson declined to discuss any enhanced security measures implemented for the return of services. However, Pastor Joel Osteen will be available for media interviews after the services.

Currently, Lakewood Church is hosting a ‘Global Health Conference’ focusing on medical missions at their campus.

Law enforcement agencies are still investigating the incident. Houston police are treating the matter as an ‘officer-involved shooting’ and have announced their intention to release body-worn camera footage from the officer involved in the altercation with Genesse Moreno within the next 30 days.

Genesse Moreno’s 7-year-old son remains hospitalized at Texas Children’s Hospital, with his condition undisclosed at this time.

A post on X (formerly known as Twitter) from December 2022 depicts Moreno holding a rifle with a trench coat in the background, similar to the one she was seen carrying in surveillance footage from her driveway shortly before the incident at Lakewood Church. The caption reads “I do not need a scope. That is PRICELESS.”
