Director reveals untold story behind ‘When Harry Met Sally’ ending

The iconic ending of When Harry Met Sally, where two cynical friends finally confess their love in a crowded New York restaurant, is etched in the minds of rom-com fans worldwide.

However, in a recent interview, director Rob Reiner revealed that the film’s original ending was far less heartwarming.

Speaking to CNN’s Chris Wallace, Reiner disclosed that the initial script had Harry and Sally parting ways after years of failed relationships. “The original ending of the film that we had was that Harry and Sally didn’t get together,” he confessed.

He attributed this cynical perspective to his own experiences at the time. “I had been married for 10 years, I’d been single for 10 years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody,” Reiner explained, highlighting how his struggles with love influenced the film’s initial direction.

However, fate intervened during filming. “I met my wife Michele, who I’ve been married to now 35 years, while we were making the film,” Reiner shared. “And I changed the ending.”

This personal turning point led to the now-famous ending, where Harry and Sally acknowledge their feelings for each other. Reiner further revealed that the iconic diner scene, featuring Meg Ryan’s unforgettable line, “I’ll have what she’s having,” was largely improvised by the actors themselves.

The revelation about the alternate ending adds a new layer to the beloved film. It underscores the power of personal experiences in shaping creative expression, and how even the most cynical perspectives can be transformed by love.

The story serves as a reminder that happy endings, both in real life and in cinema, can sometimes blossom from unexpected places.
