UH Cougars men’s basketball defies doubters to seize control of Big 12 title chase

In their inaugural season in the Big 12, the University of Houston didn’t anticipate the turn of events they’ve experienced.

Just over a year ago, former West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins warned on the Field of 68 podcast that the Big 12’s four new teams were in for a rude awakening.

“It’s going to be tough for them. They have no idea what they’re getting into,” Huggins remarked.

However, it seems the established Big 12 teams were in for a surprise.

Following a victory over sixth-ranked Iowa State on Monday night, No. 2 UH now holds sole possession of first place in what is regarded as the premier basketball conference in America. With five games remaining in their regular season, the Cougars aim to secure their first Big 12 title and clinch a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Jamal Shead played a pivotal role in the Cougars’ recent significant win, contributing 26 points and six assists. During a crucial stretch in the second half, Shead scored 10 consecutive points for his team. Head coach Kelvin Sampson hailed the senior as “the best point guard in the nation.”

Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger had high praise for Shead, emphasizing his impact on both ends of the floor and his leadership qualities.

Shead and the Cougars are now set to face nationally-ranked Baylor in Waco on Saturday.

Remaining UH Schedule:
– Feb. 24: at Baylor
– Feb. 27: Cincinnati
– March 2: at Oklahoma (televised on ESPN2)
– March 6: at UCF
– March 9: Kansas (televised on ESPN)
