Richardson ISD hosts listening sessions ahead of decision on school closures

The Richardson Independent School District is contemplating a plan named “Project RightSize,” which involves the potential closure of four elementary schools and a Pre-K campus due to declining enrollment and insufficient state funding.

As part of the proposal, Greenwood Hills, Springridge, Spring Valley, and Thurgood Marshall elementary schools would merge with other elementary schools within the district starting from the 2024-2025 academic year. The proposed attendance zone adjustments can be reviewed here.

During a listening session on Monday evening, Richardson ISD Superintendent Dr. Tabitha Branum acknowledged the concerns and discomfort expressed by parents regarding the recommendation. However, she emphasized the necessity for action in light of the lack of additional state funding and decreasing student enrollment.

Many parents, including Tiffany Davis Norris, expressed apprehension about the potential school closures and their impact on students, families, and teachers.

Superintendent Branum highlighted that the district currently has approximately 9,000 vacant elementary school seats and emphasized the need to align the budget with declining enrollment, rising costs, and increased demand for quality staff.

Project RightSize is expected to reduce expenditures by nearly $10.8 million amid a $28 million deficit faced by the district. Nevertheless, Branum stressed the importance of receiving feedback from parents and remaining open to concerns and suggestions.

She emphasized the district’s willingness to consider adjustments and alternative solutions, with the final decision expected to be made by the board on March 21 following several scheduled meetings.
