TCU urges caution after video appears to show man with gun trying to break into student off-campus housing

Campus police at TCU are cautioning the community to remain vigilant after surveillance footage captured an individual attempting to access the back door of an off-campus student residence while allegedly holding a firearm.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Sunday near 3100 Sandage Avenue in Fort Worth. Residents in the vicinity reported an escalation in such activities in recent weeks, prompting calls for enhanced neighborhood security measures.

Bo Wilbanks, a junior at TCU, described the experience as frightening and unsettling, highlighting the importance of feeling safe in the neighborhood.

According to Wilbanks, the surveillance footage was obtained from a neighbor’s home. TCU Campus Police issued a public safety bulletin on Monday, advising students to secure their residences and report any suspicious activities.

Students recounted similar incidents occurring in the neighborhood over the past few months, with concerns intensifying after the holiday season.

Wilbanks shared multiple videos depicting attempted break-ins at his off-campus residence during early morning hours. Despite efforts to report thefts and other incidents, students expressed frustration over the limited jurisdiction of TCU PD, given their off-campus status.

In response to inquiries, TCU stated that it collaborates with the Fort Worth Police Department to address security concerns and offers support services to affected students, including counseling and temporary housing options.

Concerned students sought assistance from Fort Worth PD, who assured them of increased patrols and resource allocation to address ongoing safety issues.

Students residing in the affected area emphasized the need for proactive measures to ensure their safety, including installing backyard fences. However, attempts to contact their landlord regarding safety concerns remain unanswered.
