Contractor killed in Lewisville trench collapse

A construction worker lost his life in a trench collapse on Friday afternoon, with firefighter rescue teams recovering his body from the site.

According to Lewisville officials, the incident occurred in the Indian Oaks subdivision during work on a city project. The trench collapse happened near Wanderlust and Buffalo Bend drives, trapping the worker just before 2 p.m.

James Kunke, the City of Lewisville’s community relations director, mentioned that the construction crew alerted emergency services by calling 911. Firefighters arrived to find them still attempting to dig, prompting them to halt the operation. Unfortunately, they confirmed the worker’s death upon arrival.

Teams from the Lewisville Fire Department and Coppell Fire Department trench rescue unit secured the trench and retrieved the body of the contractor.

The victim was identified as Carlos Caballo, 37, an employee of 2R Construction. The company has not yet responded to NBC 5’s request for comment.

Caballo’s brother informed NBC 5 that he had immigrated to the United States from Mexico approximately six months ago.

Neighbor Adela Herrera expressed sympathy for Caballo’s family and his coworkers, stating that the entire community is affected by the tragedy.

The construction site, part of a city project to upgrade streets and water infrastructure in the subdivision, was being managed by private contractors, as per Kunke.

The crew was in the process of replacing a sewer line approximately 12 feet deep at the time of the incident.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has assumed control of the investigation, and a section of Buffalo Bend Drive will remain closed until their investigation is complete.
