Severe weather brings flash flooding, powerful lightning strikes to North Texas

A flash flood warning brought heavy rain and intense lightning across the Metroplex on Thursday night.

Multiple roads in the DFW area had to be shut down to shield drivers from standing water, while severe weather unleashed bursts of lightning across the sky.

Footage from a doorbell camera captured a powerful lightning strike outside a home in uptown Dallas.

“When it happened, I honestly thought someone dropped a bomb on our house,” remarked Austin Green. “It was pretty startling.”

Austin and Chris Green captured several images of the strike and its aftermath, which left a tree charred along their street.

“At that point, I recognized it was lightning, but I had never heard it that close to our house before. It was quite terrifying,” Chris Green recalled.

Numerous road closures were implemented due to the accumulation of standing water, including a segment of US 377 in Keller near Westport Parkway.

The rapid rise of floodwaters was felt in Parker County.

“It came down fast, flooded fast, and unfortunately, it’s still raining out there,” expressed Melissa Hadley, founder of Golden Reward Sanctuary.

Cell phone footage depicted surging floodwaters at Hadley’s farm in Weatherford, where she mentioned experiencing the most rainfall in such a short span.

“My little drive that leads to the back pastures literally turned into a river, I mean, literally,” Hadley described. “It was probably maybe eight inches deep on my boots.”

Hadley had to clear debris obstructing the water flow to ensure her horses were safe from the flood.

“This is the worst I’ve seen in the six years I’ve lived here,” she remarked. “We’ve had floods before, but this time, it all seemed to come down from the fields.”
