Lake Highlands High School Ballet Folklorico team adds to awards count

The atmosphere during first period at Lake Highlands High School took a unique turn as some students swapped textbooks for ballet shoes.

These students are part of the Ballet Folklorico team, which recently achieved remarkable success by securing 8 trophies in the Bailes de Mi Tierra Folklorico Competition, with three of them awarded for 1st place.

“The most challenging aspect is learning the steps,” shared LHHS Ballet Folklorico Team Sr. Lt. Javier Lopez. “Initially, it made me nervous. Knowing that many people were watching me, I felt the pressure not to make mistakes in front of everyone.”

“They performed exceptionally well,” expressed LHHS Ballet Folklorico Director Lydia Corwyn with a smile. “The trophies are just a delightful bonus!”

During the competition in Austin, the team showcased a total of 14 dances.

“It exudes such strength, power, and capability; when you watch their steps, it’s like, ‘Wow,'” remarked LHHS Ballet Folklorico Team Captain Isabel Diaz. “I enjoy choreographing entire routines and then presenting them to people, demonstrating what I can do!”

At LHHS, Ballet Folklorico isn’t merely an extracurricular activity; it’s an integral part of the curriculum.

“It’s significant not only for its dance aspect but also because it represents a specific culture,” emphasized Corwyn. “These students feel a sense of belonging and reflection when they’re part of this program. Even some non-Hispanic students on the team appreciate the bond and the opportunity to learn about, understand, and respect a different culture.”

Lake Highlands High School pioneered the Ballet Folklorico team in Richardson ISD. Since then, the program has expanded to other schools in the district.

“It was heartening to witness how much it has flourished,” Corwyn reflected. “To see the growth of my students and recognize that we initiated something meaningful here is truly gratifying!”
