Houston-born filmmaker wins Oscar for live-action short | More on Wes Anderson’s 1st Academy Award

In Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Director Wes Anderson, a Houston native, clinched an Oscar win at the 96th Academy Awards for his short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” nominated in the Best Short Film – Live Action category. This marks Anderson’s eighth Oscar nomination, adding to his illustrious career.

Renowned for directing films like “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” Anderson’s upbringing in Houston included a mother who was a realtor and archaeologist, and a father involved in advertising. He grew up with two brothers, attending St. Johns School in River Oaks, where he graduated in 1987.

Interestingly, Anderson’s collegiate years at the University of Texas in Austin saw him rooming with Owen Wilson, explaining their frequent collaborations in the film industry. Films like “Rushmore,” shot partly on the St. Johns campus, further solidified his connection to Houston.

Despite his Houston roots, Anderson now resides in Paris, France. Although he won’t attend the Oscars due to commitments to his next project, Houstonians will undoubtedly cheer for him on Oscar Sunday, March 10. The ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will begin an hour earlier this year at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, preceded by red carpet coverage starting at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT.
