Dallas police officer injured in overnight shooting, 2 teens arrested and 1 still at large

A Dallas police officer is in stable condition after being shot during an incident on Thursday morning.

According to the Dallas Police Department, around 12:45 a.m., officers, who were operating covertly in an unmarked car, observed a vehicle driving erratically in the 3200 block of Easter Avenue.

Police stated that as officers pursued the vehicle, a suspect inside fired shots at them, hitting one officer in the hip.

Witness Darryl Williams described hearing the gunshots and seeing the vehicle involved in the incident stop nearby.

The pursuit of the suspect vehicle continued, with the assistance of Air One and Dallas police, leading to the arrest of five suspects in the 7200 block of Chesterfield Drive.

Police later determined that the suspect vehicle had been stolen.

Jaheart Nickelberry, 17, was charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, evading arrest, aggravated robbery, and theft.

Additionally, a 15-year-old female was charged with evading arrest, while three other teenagers were released without charges. One male suspect remains at large.

The injured officer, whose name has not been disclosed, is a four-year veteran of the department and is currently hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia provided an update on the officer’s condition, stating that the officer was in good spirits and expressed concern about whether the suspects had been apprehended.

Two suspects were also taken to the hospital for medical treatment, one for chest pain and the other for non-life-threatening injuries.

Two firearms were recovered, one from inside the suspect vehicle and another discarded outside during the pursuit.

No shots were fired by police officers during the incident.

Mark Herrera, a law enforcement expert with extensive experience, highlighted the challenges faced by undercover officers in identifying themselves in high-pressure situations.
