$150,000 reward offered in latest robbery of U.S. letter carrier in DFW

A reward of up to $150,000 is being offered for tips leading federal authorities to the individual responsible for robbing a letter carrier in Fort Worth.

The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. on March 15 at the Slate apartments on Wellesley Avenue, just off Hulen Street.

Sean Smith, a U.S. Postal Inspector in the Fort Worth Division, is leading the investigation. “We’ve issued a reward of up to $150,000,” he confirmed.

While Smith did not witness whether the suspect was armed, he verified that the letter carrier was unharmed.

This robbery is the latest in a series of similar incidents targeting mail carriers, many of which have involved armed perpetrators targeting apartment complexes from Dallas to Fort Worth in recent months.

Criminals typically aim to steal mail carrier keys used to access collection or cluster boxes, enabling them to steal letters and engage in fraud or identity theft, Smith explained.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service, is actively investigating such cases but cannot provide details about ongoing investigations or confirm arrests in previous incidents.

However, Smith emphasized their commitment to pursuing justice for those who harm postal carriers. “It’s a serious matter. It’s a federal felony,” he emphasized.

The suspect in the March 15 robbery is described as a Black male in his early 20s, approximately 5’8” tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with an off-white logo, black shorts with a green stripe, black socks, and black flip-flops.

Smith highlighted the federal ‘Project Safe Delivery’ program, which aims to enhance security and increase rewards to reduce crimes against postal employees.

Although robbery of on-duty postal employees has increased in recent years, Smith noted that Project Safe Delivery has led to improvements in safety for letter carriers. “The electronic locking mechanisms that are being installed make it hard for criminals to use those keys,” he stated.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery is urged to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 and specify ‘law enforcement’ when prompted, referencing case number 4272276-ROBB. All information provided will remain strictly confidential.
