Looking past awareness, advocates prepare to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month in April

In anticipation of Autism Acceptance Month, Avondale House CEO Steve Vetrano emphasized the transition from mere awareness to acceptance of individuals on the autism spectrum and their unique needs within our community.

Founded in 1976 by parents of children with autism, Avondale House remains the sole agency in the Greater Houston area dedicated to serving individuals with moderate to severe autism, starting from age five and throughout their lives.

The nonprofit offers a range of vital services, including a year-round school, adult day program, supported employment program, and family-centered group homes.

According to Vetrano, these services are crucial in the Greater Houston area, and the community has shown strong support. The Desert Gallery, for instance, has pledged to donate 10% of sales from a specially designed cookie to Avondale House, while a generous donor has promised a matching gift for April.

Avondale House is also organizing a spring event titled “Embracing Autism, Hear Our Voices.”

Funds raised during Autism Acceptance Month will contribute to Avondale House’s expansion efforts, aiming to create a nurturing environment where individuals with autism can flourish, learn, and develop essential life skills with support and enrichment.
