Murky waters in creek prompt testing in Garland

City crews in Garland are investigating reports of murky waters in a local creek following complaints from residents. According to neighbors, the normally clear waters of the creek began to appear white as of Wednesday.

The issue originated near the 2400 block of Lonnecker Drive, where crews were observed replacing water lines. The unidentified substance spread along 1.5 miles of the creek, reaching Tinsley Park off Anita Drive and Saturn Road.

Robert Hankins, a longtime resident living along the creek, described the water as resembling snow and noted a significant amount of suds present. His neighbor, Stephen Yearout, reported detecting a chemical smell reminiscent of latex paint.

Concerned about potential harm to wildlife, Hankins notified the city of Garland of the situation.

In response, Garland city officials promptly dispatched Health and Water Utilities staff to test the water, finding no hazardous substances. Within 24 hours, the city erected a dirt dam near Saturn Road and Anita Drive to contain the contaminated water. City workers from the Waste Water Services department collected additional samples as part of ongoing testing efforts.

Garland city officials stated that they are collaborating with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to conduct a comprehensive analysis and identify the source of the cloudy water. To restore the creek to its natural condition, the city plans to release fresh water upstream, with fire hydrants being used to flush the creek on Thursday.

Despite assurances from the city regarding safety, Yearout expressed skepticism and collected a water sample for independent testing.

While the cause of the cloudy water remains undetermined, the city stated that there are no reported breaks in city water and wastewater lines. Updates on the investigation will be provided through the city’s social media channels.
